ABOUT PERRY
I was born in North Carolina but raised in Florida for most of my life. I moved to Gainesville in 2000 to attend school at the University of Florida and like many others who come to Gainesville, I never left. I completed my Bachelors degree in Psychology and worked in a research lab for a year before starting graduate school to work towards my Masters of Education and Education Specialists degrees with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling. I then returned to the Counselor Education program in 2009 for my doctoral studies.
In my free time, I enjoy physical activity, being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Due to the stressful nature of my previous work experiences, I learned the importance of self-care, including seeking out my own personal therapy. One of the biggest stress relievers for me, personally, has been physical activity. I enjoy running (although by no means would I consider myself to be fast!), crossfit workouts, and boxing. I have always loved the sport of boxing and I actually competed as an amateur boxer for several years. I continue to box for fun and sometimes work with others who want to learn the sport.
I am passionate about the work I do with folks in therapy and I am committed to staying in touch with my own process. One of the ways I have found to do this is through a regular meditation practice. I have found that meditation increases my presence both personally and professionally. It also has helped me have more compassion for myself and others. I have participated in several meditation retreats, including a week at Karme Choling in Vermont and Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia.
The newest adventure in my life has been becoming a mother to my two wonderful children. It has been such a joy to watch them change and develop into who they are. Being a mom is by far the most difficult role I have taken on but also the one I feel most proud of. I am reminded daily of the importance of patience and flexibility; they have taught me so much!
